Dear Colleague
Many of you will have seen or heard of this mornings announcement by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBOS) relating to ABN AMRO.
So I wanted to send you this short letter to tell you whats in my mind. In a phrase, Im not surprised by this development and nothing changes for us as a result of it. The situation remains that the Board of ABN AMRO and the Board of Barclays have both recommended the merger of the two companies. I said to you in my previous letters on the subject that the merger represents a great opportunity for us to accelerate. That hasnt changed either!
What Barclays offers, and what RBOS offers, stand in stark contrast: on the one hand a decision by the Boards of both banks to build, through merger, one of the great banking power-houses in the world with all the benefits for customers and clients, for shareholders and for colleagues that goes with that; and on the other, the deconstruction into heaven knows how many parts of one of the biggest banks in Europe. Its very clear what ABN AMRO want. And I want ABN, alongside Barclays, to be a founding partner of what will be one of the great banking enterprises, and great banking stories, of the 21st Century.
So Im feeling entirely calm about this, and I want you to feel calm as well! And meanwhile, keep focusing on our customers: thats what they expect and thats what they deserve.
John
