Hitachi Announces to Establish Securities-based Employee Retirement Benefit Trust

Tokyo, March 26, 2008 — Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT / TSE:6501) today announced the conclusion to establish an employee retirement benefit trust and to contribute certain shares of stock that Hitachi holds to the employee retirement benefit trust in order to improve its pension financing and increase its utilization of financial assets. Hitachi will post a gain to its consolidated and unconsolidated financial results for fiscal 2007 due to this activity.

However, there will be no change in Hitachi’s business forecast for the year ending on March 31, 2008, which was announced on March 14, 2008.

42,240 million yen

3. Effect on Hitachi’s business results

Hitachi will post a gain on the sale of stocks of 21,040 million yen for ending March 31, 2008 on consolidated basis due to the difference between the book value of the stocks and the value of the benefit trust at the time of establishment. Hitachi will record an extraordinary gain of 10,240 million yen for contribution to an employee retirement benefit trust. However, there will be no change in Hitachi’s business forecast for the year ending on March 31, 2008, which was announced on March 14, 2008.
