Leading Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation Dog Training Program Expands Into 3rd Prison at Corcoran Substance Abuse Treatment Facility (SATF)

Wiley's Wish Animal Rescue Gives Second Chances to Residents & Rescue Dogs

SANTA CLARA, CA / ACCESSWIRE / November 21, 2024 / Wiley's Wish Animal Rescue (Wiley's) announces the expansion of its Paws of Hope proprietary inmate/rescue dog-training initiative into Corcoran Substance Abuse Treatment Facility (SATF). Designated as the Unleashed Rescue Academy at the prison, Wiley's third prison program changes lives. It educates qualifying prison residents with a canine-related curriculum, equipping them with skills to train dogs rescued from high-kill shelters in California. Wiley's sets itself apart by making available for adoption: well-adjusted, trained, and certified dogs. Participants in the program earn specialized certifications and/or a two-year university Associate of Science degree in Canine Studies & Behavior. Rescue dogs in the program graduate well-trained with AKC/CGC certifications and often become vital service dogs in a variety of capacities.

Wiley's is one of the very few state-accredited inmate/dog-training initiatives to meet California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation requirements. Since 2021, Wiley's has rescued, rehabilitated, and placed over 700 dogs into loving, forever homes. Since 2022, its Paws of Hope initiative has expertly trained, certified, and placed over 200 of those rescues. With the addition of Corcoran SATF, Wiley's oversees over 170 handlers and 50 rescue dogs across all three of its prisons. "Our goal is to ensure participants are given a second chance," explains Wiley's founder Angel Kleiner. "Our programs change lives and heal souls - human and canine. Our dogs are highly sought after - they get two to three months of stringent training and graduate well-socialized, crate- and potty-trained, and set up for success in their forever home."

The Paws of Hope initiative launched in Soledad California State Prison in 2022 as the first, and remains the only, inmate/rescue dog training program within the nation's first Veterans hub exclusive to military veterans. Identified as the Stripes and Paws Dog Program, Director, K-9 Trainer and Army Veteran Sam Brinegar explains, "You will never find more loyalty, love or acceptance than from a dog that almost lost their life and no more dedicated trainer than one who came from nothing given an opportunity." Wiley's follow-up program Second Chance successfully launched in early 2024 at Pleasant Valley State Prison in Coalinga, California. Now the third and latest at Corcoran SATF is called Unleashed Rescue Academy.

AKC Certified Dog Trainer Vona Darnell works hands-on with participants. "The impact of the programs is life-changing," states Darnell. "Learning communication skills, teamwork, responsibility, and problem-solving - coming away from the training equipped with real-world experience when they reintegrate back into the community."
