City of Hope Ranked Top 5 in the Nation for Cancer Care by U.S. News & World Report

City of Hope, one of the largest and most advanced cancer research and treatment organizations in the United States, has been recognized as having one of the nation’s top 5 hospitals for cancer care, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2024-25 rankings. City of Hope is the only California-based cancer institution ranked in the top 5. The recognition marks the latest milestone for City of Hope as it enhances its ability to make a meaningful impact in the lives of patients, families and communities nationwide.

“City of Hope has been on an extraordinary journey to make new research breakthroughs and lifesaving treatments readily accessible to everyone touched by cancer,” said Robert Stone, CEO of City of Hope and the Helen and Morgan Chu Chief Executive Officer Distinguished Chair. “This ranking reflects our dedicated team’s ability to deliver on our most important goal — saving lives.”

The placement on the “Best Hospitals” for cancer list was due to several factors, including high marks for patient outcomes and survival data, advanced clinical capabilities, technology and reputation among oncology specialists.

City of Hope is home to many of the world’s top experts across a range of complex cancer types and innovative technologies, with more than 550 physicians and 1,000 researchers and scientists part of its nationally integrated system. The system includes its Los Angeles campus, a network of clinical care locations across Southern California, a new cancer center in Orange County, California, and cancer treatment centers and outpatient facilities in the Atlanta, Chicago and Phoenix metropolitan areas.

In addition to City of Hope’s National Medical Center in Los Angeles being ranked as one of the nation’s top 5 hospitals for cancer care, the center was rated as “high performing” for all six cancer procedures and conditions measured by U.S. News & World Report: lung cancer surgery, colon cancer surgery, prostate cancer surgery, gynecologic cancer surgery, gastroenterology and GI cancer surgery, as well as in the treatment of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. City of Hope Atlanta was rated as “high performing” in colon cancer surgery, and City of Hope Chicago was rated as “high performing” in gynecologic cancer surgery.

With a National Cancer Institute-designated academic cancer center at its core, City of Hope is a global leader in translating breakthrough research into effective treatments through collaboration and scientific exploration. This includes:

  • The country’s largest, and one of the most successful and internationally recognized, bone marrow transplantation programs (BMT). City of Hope remains a pioneer in BMT and cellular therapies, with locations across the country offering breakthrough treatments for all hematologic malignancies.
  • More than 850 clinical trials each year, with an expansive geographical footprint that provides access to innovative therapies for patients across the U.S.
  • An “Exceptional” rating, the highest possible, from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the federal government’s principal agency for cancer research and training. This places the center in the top echelon of the nation’s 57 NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers.

More than 86 million people now live in communities with local access to a City of Hope location. Last year, the organization treated more than 144,000 patients.
