David Woods Bartley, a suicide attempt survivor, 2-time TEDx speaker, and credentialed international mental health presenter, is renowned for his ability to make the daunting topic of suicide and the challenging goal of suicide prevention both understandable and achievable.
In his presentation, "The Why of Suicide and the How of Hope," he addresses the often-hidden reality of suicide, using personal examples to highlight how much can be concealed behind a forced smile, a distracting joke, or the facade of a perfect life.
However, Mr. Bartley uses most of his talk to teach how we can all access the power of Hope for ourselves and someone in crisis. And, in his opinion, it is Hope that is the greatest form of suicide prevention.
Mr. Bartley is proud to share his deeply personal journey, recounting his experience from a decades-long knock-down, drag-out battle with severe mental illness and a suicide attempt to achieving genuine mental well-being. He has presented his story more than 800 times to diverse audiences, including schools from K-college, businesses of all kinds, first responders, community organizations, and all military branches worldwide.
