Supergut Teams up with Urban Edge Network to Become the "Official Gut Health Nutrition Partner" of Grambling State University Athletics

Los Angeles, California, United States - 08-23-2022 (PR Distribution™) -

In their continued pursuit of excellence on and off the field, the Department of Athletics at Grambling State University (GSU) has huddled up with functional food startup Supergut (formerly Muniq) and Urban Edge Network (UEN) – a Black-owned media company focused on publishing and distributing content from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) – to introduce evidence-based gut health solutions to the world of college sports.

Gut Health Nutrition for Athletes

As the “Official Gut Health Nutrition Partner” to GSU, Supergut will provide Grambling State University Athletics with their line of gut-balancing shakes and snack bars, as well as input about how to best incorporate them into the daily diets of student-athletes at GSU.

In their continued pursuit of excellence on and off the field, GSU is recognizing the importance of nutrition and gut health in supporting cognitive recovery, providing energy to perform in class and after workouts, improve sleep, and even boost on-field performance.

“This partnership allows for GSU Athletics to continue in developing the holistic student-athlete.  We are excited to provide this product to our student-athletes to enhance their overall well-being,” says Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Trayvean Scott.

Change Your Gut, Change Your Life

This partnership represents a game-changing opportunity to broaden awareness about the importance of gut health for everyone. The role that optimal gut functionality has on improving health and performance — even for young, healthy athletes — is significant, with a growing body of evidence showing that overall wellbeing starts in the gut. [1

The gut microbiome is essentially the command center for human health and performance. It plays an important role in boosting energy, preventing inflammation, and improving sleep, cardio-metabolic function, and even athletic performance. [2, 3, 4, 5]  Supergut recently validated the effectiveness of its nutrition products – all formulated with a proprietary blend of resistant starch fiber – in improving gut health and a range of wellness measures in a rigorous gold-standard clinical trial.

In short, harnessing the healing power of the gut is an easy “W” for GSU’s athletics department.

According to Supergut Founder & CEO Marc Washington, “Supergut is proud to serve as the ‘Official Gut Health Nutrition Partner’ for Grambling State University, a true hallmark of educational advancement in the Black community. As a former college football player I am honored to support these student-athletes with our clinically-validated gut-balancing products to help them excel, both on and off the field!”

An A-Team of Partners

Another noteworthy aspect of this partnership is the players involved.

This partnership is a great example of a community coming together to work towards a common goal — a Black-owned nutrition company joining up with a Black-owned media company in order to support a Historically Black University with gut health nutrition. And the timing is also noteworthy given August is Black Business Month.

These layers of community are vitally important when you consider the current public health crisis. Today, 70% of people are overweight or obese, 50% have some form of diabetes or pre-diabetes, 50% have some form of cardiovascular health risk. Each of these conditions disproportionately affects communities of color. In fact, African American and Latino communities have a 50% higher incidence of almost every single one of these chronic conditions.

This partnership represents a meaningful grassroots opportunity to build awareness around the importance of gut health and nutrition from the bottom up.

“Partnering and supporting Black-owned businesses is one of the tenants of Urban Edge Network’s mission,” says UEN CEO Todd Brown. “Nutrition and gut health are important keys to a healthier life. Bringing Supergut to enhance nutrition for the Grambling State Tigers scholar athletes will add competitive advantages for athletes in their stomachs and on the fields of play.”

In short, this partnership between Supergut, UEN, and GSU Athletics is a total touchdown.
