Saratoga Springs Plastic Surgeon Shares Six Facts to Know Before Having a Labiaplasty

Saratoga Springs, New York, United States - 03-21-2023 (PR Distribution™) -

Steven Yarinsky, MD, FACS, a Saratoga Springs- and Albany-area plastic surgeon with over 30 years of experience in feminine intimate cosmetic surgery and vaginal rejuvenation procedures, shares insight for patients considering labiaplasty.

Saratoga Springs, NY – According to Albany-area plastic surgeon Steven Yarinsky, MD, FACS, vaginal rejuvenation surgery is a major life decision that should be considered with great care. While many women desire to contour, reshape, and tighten their intimate areas due to childbirth, hormonal changes, weight fluctuations, or the natural course of aging, Dr. Yarinsky stresses that it is essential for patients interested in these procedures to understand their options. “This way,” he says, “patients can properly prepare for cosmetic surgery and be able to identify what bothers them about their anatomy that they would like to modify or improve.”

Dr. Yarinsky, who performs the full breadth of cosmetic surgery in addition to female intimate surgery, states that the most popular vaginal rejuvenation surgery offered at his practice is labiaplasty. While this procedure generally targets treating either the labia majora (outer lips) or labia minora (inner lips), Dr. Yarinsky can combine a variety of advanced techniques to address concerns in both areas at once. Labia can stretch, tear, and enlarge over the years, leading to asymmetry and/or excess skin. Many women have congenital or inherited long labia minora. “A woman’s concern with her appearance can be both embarrassing and physically uncomfortable,” Dr. Yarinsky says. He has put together the following list of facts to help patients prepare for labiaplasty:

1. Labiaplasty is not always a cosmetic surgery.

Although some women choose to have a labiaplasty only to improve the appearance of their labia, this is not always the case. Many women who have long labia minora or excess tissue or skin may not be able to wear tighter clothes, exercise, have intercourse, or even sit down without having significant discomfort and embarrassment. Enlarged labial tissue can also cause chafing and irritation. Many patients, says Dr. Yarinsky, choose to have a labiaplasty to treat both functional and aesthetic concerns.

2. Labiaplasty scars, with the proper plastic surgery technique, are usually minimal.

Dr. Yarinsky urges patients not to let the fear of excessive scarring keep them from undergoing labiaplasty. Although some labiaplasty techniques, such as linear edge trimming, often leave more visible and potentially painful scars in their wake, Dr. Yarinsky’s technique of double wedge resection carefully places each incision within the creases and folds of the vagina to hide scars and keep the labia looking as natural as possible. These hidden scars soften and usually fade to a flesh color within approximately a year.

3. There is no specific age requirement for labiaplasty.

While the majority of women who seek labiaplasty want to reduce the effects of age, weight fluctuations, or childbirth, many women are born with disproportionately large or elongated labia minora. Dr. Yarinsky has treated adolescents as young as 15, but he emphasizes the procedure must be their decision (and there is no external motivating force, such as a parent who wants their daughter to have it done). Of course, those under the age of 18 are considered minors and need permission from a parent or guardian.

4. Recovery may take longer than you might expect.

Because labiaplasty is a highly customizable procedure which can include several different methods, the precise timeline for recovery can vary. That said, Dr. Yarinsky advises his patients to refrain from having intercourse, using tampons, performing strenuous exercise, or otherwise placing pressure on the perineum (groin region) for 8 to 10 weeks after surgery. He also encourages patients to strictly adhere to their personalized aftercare instructions for safe recuperation. Complications like wound edge separation or poor healing may result from resuming activities.

5. Touch-ups are sometimes necessary.

The results of labiaplasty when the procedure is correctly performed are usually “one and done.” An intimate area of the body that was bothersome is no longer an issue and women have a lifelong improvement in their self-esteem. Although labia minora will not “regrow” after they are trimmed, vaginal deliveries and aging can cause labial tissue to stretch once more. In such cases, Dr. Yarinsky often recommends ThermiVa®, a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment designed to tighten vaginal and labial tissue using radiofrequency energy. He is the only plastic surgeon or doctor located within 100 miles of the Albany and Capital District region who offers ThermiVa®.

6. Labiaplasty recovery is not known to be especially painful.

Dr. Yarinsky says women may shy away from labiaplasty because it sounds uncomfortable. In reality, however, most women who have a labiaplasty have found it to be minimally painful. Patients are sedated throughout the procedure or can choose to have their procedure asleep using general anesthesia. While post-surgical discomfort is not typically intense, Dr. Yarinsky prescribes pain medication for those who need it. Most women soon convert to only taking Tylenol® during their recovery.

Dr. Yarinsky encourages all patients who have questions about labiaplasty to bring them up during their consultation. “This type of procedure can be difficult to talk about,” he adds, “but it is important to be informed about the available techniques and the preparation before and recovery after their procedure.”
