Milan Wine Country – Really? Yes, Really!

If you’ve been to Milan countless times and feel like you’ve explored every corner, think again! While the fashion capital may not be the first place you associate with vineyards and rolling hills, the region of Lombardy is home to some incredible wine-producing areas, just a stone’s throw from Milan. Pack your bags and prepare to discover the lesser-known wine regions around Milan—perfect for a weekend getaway or even a day trip.
Montevecchia: Hidden Vineyards in the Hills
Just 30 kilometers from Milan, the hilly area of Montevecchia, located in the Brianza region, is one of the hidden gems of Lombardy’s wine production. Here, the terraced vineyards produce small quantities of wine, known for its rustic charm and earthy flavors. Montevecchia is home to beautiful landscapes, where vineyards blend with olive groves and historic villas.
My Recommendations:
- Wine tasting: Visit local producers like La Costa Winery, where you can sample excellent reds and whites. They have a fabulous restaurant called Galbusera Nera. Be sure to book in advance as it is very popular with the locals.
- Nature walks: Explore Parco Regionale di Montevecchia e della Valle del Curone for scenic hikes through vineyards and countryside. Bike tours and organized hikes are available.
- Lunch with a view: Head to Ristorante Passone for a meal paired with local wines and breathtaking views over the vineyards.
- Pro tip: On top Montevecchia is a church and sanctuary, Santuario della Beata Vergine del Carmelo a nice place for a quiet contemplation.
Where to stay:
For a quiet escape, stay at Locanda Moderna Carlambroeus, a boutique hotel that offers charming rooms and fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.
How to Get There:
Montevecchia is just a 40-minute drive from Milan. Alternatively, you can take the train from Milano Porta Garibaldi to Cernusco-Merate and then a short taxi ride to reach the vineyards.
Valtellina: The Alpine Wine Haven
About 120 kilometers north of Milan lies Valtellina, a stunning alpine valley known for producing world-class Nebbiolo wines. The region’s steep terraced vineyards are awe-inspiring, and the wines here are celebrated for their complexity and structure. Valtellina is a must-visit for wine lovers seeking unique, high-quality wines in an unforgettable mountainous setting.
My Recommendations:
- Wine tasting: Visit Nino Negri, one of the top wineries in the region, or explore small family-run vineyards like Sandro Fay for a more intimate experience.
- Wine trails: The Sentiero Valtellina trail is perfect for exploring the vineyards on foot or by bike, offering scenic routes through the valley.
- Dining: Don’t miss the opportunity to dine at La Fiorida, a Michelin-starred restaurant that pairs local Valtellina wines with regional cuisine.

Where to Stay:
Book an overnight or weekend at La Fiorida a boutique farm stay (agroturismo) with zero KM cuisine. The milk, cheese and meat is produced right there on the farm. Be sure to try Pizzoccheri, (my husband says it the best he’s had in over 20 years!) Enjoy the wellness spa there too.
How to Get There:
Valtellina is about a 1.5- to 2-hour drive from Milan. You can also take the train from Milano Centrale to Sondrio, with direct connections available.
Franciacorta: The Home of Italy’s Finest Sparkling Wines
Less than 80 kilometers east of Milan, Franciacorta is Italy’s answer to Champagne. This picturesque region, nestled between Lake Iseo and Brescia, is famous for its sparkling wines made using the traditional method. Franciacorta wines are celebrated for their elegance and complexity, making the region a must-visit for any sparkling wine enthusiast. Spend a day of wine tasting with lunch in the heart of bubbly territory.
My Recommendations:
- Wine tasting: Visit renowned producers like Ca’ del Bosco or Bellavista for luxurious tastings of their signature Franciacorta wines.
- Lake Iseo: Spend an afternoon by the serene waters of Lake Iseo, just a short drive from the vineyards, and take a boat trip to the stunning Monte Isola.

- Pro tip: Visit the Grappa Museum at the Borgo Antico San Vitale. Learn about the history and techniques used to make Grappa. You will have a whole new appreciation for this potente distilled grape brandy.

Known for its crisp and fresh Cortese di Gavi white wines, this area offers a different experience from Lombardy’s reds and sparkling varieties. The town of Gavi is charming, with medieval architecture, and the surrounding vineyards are perfect for those looking for a more off-the-beaten-path wine destination.
