The LVMPD Foundation hosted its 11th Annual “Sheriff Salutes the Best of the Badge” Gala Saturday night at the Wynn Hotel. Each year, the event honors officers for distinguishing themselves in the line of duty. These brave men and women are dedicated to saving lives as they face their own mortality, and their dramatic and harrowing stories earn the top officers a commendation. Among these are: Sheriff’s Honors Award, the Medal of Valor, the Unit Medal of Valor, the Preservation of Life Award, the Medal of Honor, and the Purple Heart Award.
In his address to Gala attendees, Sheriff McMahill emphasized one unique aspect of this year’s event. “For the first time in Best of the Badge history, we will award five Purple Hearts,” he said. “This award is reserved for those who suffer substantial bodily injury inflicted by a hostile subject in the line of duty. My people face danger every single day.” Recognizing the tremendous measures officers take to de-escalate dangerous situations and preserve life, McMahill presented honorees with their well-deserved medals. In a special acknowledgment, he presented the “Sheriff’s Honors: Best of Staff” Award to Assistant Sheriff Yaz Yatomi, who consistently prioritizes police officers and the community she serves.
In attendance once again this year was Las Vegas entrepreneur Antonio Accornero, the newest board member of the LVMPD Foundation. “It’s an honor for me to attend this Gala every year to celebrate the heroism of all the officers,” said Accornero, “but this year is especially meaningful, since I am now on the Foundation Board of Directors.” Support from civic-minded business leaders like Accornero enables officers to better protect communities and reduce crime across Clark County.
Funds raised from the Best of the Badge Gala directly support community safety programs and advanced officer training, and help to procure essential crime-fighting equipment and technology. The investments in these programs and equipment make a positive impact every day in southern Nevada and within the LVMPD family. Event sponsors included corporate interests such as Wynn Las Vegas, NextGen Protection, Murphy Electric, Caesars Foundation, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, and the Las Vegas Raiders Football Team, as well as smaller local businesses.
Antonio Accornero’s generous contributions over the years have helped to fund many initiatives, such as community engagement and public safety programs. As a staunch proponent of making the city of Las Vegas safer for everyone, Mr. Accornero is committed to continuing his support of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
