Art Exhibition - Anne Seidman: Generative Abstraction 1986-1990

By: PRLog

We are delighted to present Anne Seidman's early work, exploring her plotter drawings - combining an interest in computer animation with two-dimensional work. This exhibition features nine works on paper, created between 1986-1990, with IBM and Amiga computers, plotter printers and, at times, artist-applied inks, dyes and paints.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. & LOS ANGELES & PHILADELPHIA - Jan. 22, 2024 - PRLog -- Preview our latest exhibition in conjunction with Fourth Friday, Perez Art District's monthly Art Walk featuring over 30 art galleries, art studios, and shops.

The opening reception for this exhibition will be on Friday, January 26 from 4-7pm. The exhibition will continue through March 17, 2024.

About Anne Seidman

Anne Seidman (b. 1950) is a contemporary artist currently residing in Los Angeles, California and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her recent work, which you may have seen at our Gallery, consists primarily of large colored pencil drawings and small paintings on board.

Anne had been creating art, drawings and paintings, for 14 years when she developed a keen interest in experimenting with computer animation and art derived through digital means. She was able to enter a program at Ohio State University that was at the forefront of this type of work.

Anne's early digital artwork included "The Blue Chair" and "Ghoti", two animations she had created. Anne received recognition for the animations, including "The Blue Chair" and a layered still image being shown in the Art and Technology Pavilion at the 42nd Venice Biennale, an exhibition of International contemporary art, held in 1986.

These works were also exhibited in Dallas at Siggraph, an annual conference centered around computer graphics, in 1986. While attending Siggraph, she discovered works that were two-dimensional and realized with computers and architectural plotter printers. She found the imaging to be beautiful and simple but she did not have access to a plotter printer - until she began a teaching position at Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia.

In this exhibit we explore those pieces, created between 1986-1990 while at Moore College, using Amiga and IBM computers to produce unique and intriguing works on paper using plotter printers and, in some cases, further manipulation after printing with inks, stains and paints.

Anne Seidman received a B.F.A. from Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1972, M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee in Painting and Drawing in 1976, and M.A. from Ohio State University in 3-D Computer Graphics and Animation in 1986.

She took a position as Professor of Art at Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia teaching Digital Drawing and Imaging, Animation and Web Design in 1986.

In 1989, Anne curated "Printmaking: At the Speed of Thought" for The Print Club in Philadelphia, an International exhibition of algorithmically generated works, featuring current works from her peers as well as earlier works from her art-heroes including Edward Zajec and Manfred Mohr, pioneers in digital art.

In 1996, Anne received a Philadelphia Museum of Art Purchase Award for Works on Paper and in 2008 she was the recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant and Pew Fellowship in the Arts award.
